Protected Species and Marine Biodiversity at Pescare Show Education: the Role of Research, New Regulations, and Responsible Fishing

Pescare Show Education is a section dedicated to sustainability and the protection of the marine environment, designed for those passionate about sport fishing and for anyone who cares about underwater life. Through educational content, expert interviews, and insights into aquatic biodiversity, this platform aims to inspire and educate new generations (and beyond!) of conscious anglers.

Understanding the Mediterranean to Protect the Future of Sport Fishing and Sustainability

The Mediterranean Sea, while covering only 1% of the world’s ocean surface, hosts extraordinary biodiversity with endemic species and unique habitats. However, it is also one of the most exploited seas globally, facing intense pressure on its resources and ecosystems. Both commercial and sport fishing play a key role in managing marine biodiversity, making an approach based on knowledge, sustainability, and innovation essential.

At Pescare Show 2025, from February 7 to 9 in Rimini, a series of talks will explore various aspects of marine wildlife conservation, with particular focus on protecting endangered species and responsibly managing aquatic resources. It will be a great opportunity to understand how everyone—especially those who live for the sea—can contribute to its preservation.

LIFE projects on sharks and proper bycatch release

Sharks, often victims of accidental fishing, are at the center of three LIFE projects aimed at reducing bycatch and improving release practices in both recreational and commercial fishing. During the talk, the monitoring and management actions developed in these projects will be presented, showcasing their impact on the conservation of these predators essential to the balance of the marine ecosystem.

LIFE European Sharks and new Italian regulations for the protection of endangered species

What are the latest regulations for managing protected species? In this talk, we will explore the most recent Italian laws concerning biodiversity conservation, with a special focus on sharks and rays. Understanding these rules is essential to practicing responsible and sustainable fishing, helping to protect the most vulnerable species.

Sport fishing and research: the case of the garfish tagged with satellite trackers

Sport and recreational fishing can become a valuable resource for science. A concrete example is the study of the Mediterranean spearfish (Tetrapturus belone, Istiophoridae), where collaboration between anglers and researchers allowed six individuals to be tagged with satellite trackers. This project provided crucial data on the species' movements and behavior, demonstrating how recreational fishing can support research in monitoring fish populations.

This space is therefore not only a training resource but a true environment for discussion and dialogue, where the passion for fishing combines with the awareness of the need to protect the marine environment. Involving sport and recreational anglers in data collection not only improves scientific knowledge but also strengthens respect for the sea. Through sustainable practices and advanced techniques for releasing and monitoring, everyone can contribute to the conservation of marine biodiversity.
