The Big One: hunting for record-breaking sea bass

3rd edition of the kayak fishing competition in the Western Lagoon and the Orbetello Kayak Experience

For all enthusiasts of sea bass fishing from kayaks, a great event is coming to the lagoon of Orbetello: just one day to prove you are the best. On Sunday, November 2, closing the competition season, comes the 3rd edition of "The Big One." Organized by the sports association Insidefishing and Bolsena Yachting, in collaboration with Pescare Show and under the patronage of the Municipality of Orbetello, "The Big One" features a scoring system as simple as it is thrilling: the winner is whoever catches the biggest sea bass—or rather, the longest one.

The battleground of the challenge will be the Western Lagoon, home to giant sea bass, some of which even exceed 80 cm. Held at the same time as the famous food and wine festival Gustatus, "The Big One" also gives participants and their families the chance to experience the finest products of the Maremma. And for those who have never tried kayaking, on Saturday, November 1, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Orbetello Kayak Experience will be held: demonstrations and training sessions with instructors and tutors at the docks along the Western Lagoon, in front of Piazza della Repubblica, offering the chance to experience the lagoon immersed in nature, practically at water level.

The competition "The Big One" will start at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 2, and will close at 1:00 p.m.. The event is open to everyone; minors up to 17 years old may participate only if accompanied, under the responsibility of another adult participant who will oversee the young competitor. Registrations are open until Sunday, October 20, by filling out the form available on the Insidefishing website.

Those without a kayak can rent one directly on-site through partner Bolsena Yachting. The competition embraces the catch and release philosophy, so to allow for the rapid release of the fish, length verification will be based on photos taken directly by participants, using their smartphones or tablets. These images must then be sent in real time via WhatsApp to the jury’s official contact.

At the end of the competition, winners and participants will gather at Ristorante I Pescatori, next to the landing area, for a communal lunch, the closing ceremony, and the awards presentation.
