Paradiso della pesca a mosca secca nella giungla

Situato dove la foresta pluviale incontra la savana, il Kendjam Lodge è circondato da una giungla arida che ospita una varietà di fauna apparentemente infinita: giaguari, puma, capibara, tapiri, grandi ara blu, serpenti d’acqua a strisce rosse, lontre giganti, anguille elettriche, caimani… e l’elenco potrebbe continuare all’infinito. Senza contare le innumerevoli specie di uccelli.

"Located where the rainforest meets the savannah, Kendjam Lodge is surrounded by arid jungle which is home to a seemingly endless array of wildlife, including jaguar, puma, capybara, tapir, giant blue macaws, red striped water snakes, giant river otters, electric eels, caiman…the list goes on and on. And more bird species than one can count."

E se la fauna terrestre è straordinaria, i veri protagonisti sono i pesci. Il fiume Iriri, che scorre accanto al villaggio di Kendjam — sede della tribù indigena Kayapó — e poi, tre ore più a valle, del Kendjam Lodge, ospita una vera lista dei desideri di specie della giungla da insidiare con la canna da mosca. Tucunaré (peacock bass), payara, tre specie di pacu, matrinxã, wolf fish, bicuda, pesce gatto a coda rossa, surubí, piranha e molte altre… tutti abitano l’Iriri, e molti di loro attaccano anche una mosca secca.

"And while the wildlife is lovely, the fish are the star of the show. The Iriri River, which flows alongside Kendjam Village, home to the indigenous Kayapó tribe and then—three hours downstream—Kendjam Lodge, is home to a hit list of jungle species to chase with a fly rod. Peacock bass, payara, three kinds of pacu, matrinxã, wolf fish, bicuda, red-tailed catfish, surubi, piranha and more… they all call the Iriri home, and many of them will eat a dry fly."

Nessuno conosce queste acque meglio dei Kayapó. Il Kendjam Lodge è gestito in stretta collaborazione con la tribù e ogni barca che parte dal lodge lo fa con non solo una guida professionista anglofona, ma anche uno o due guide Kayapó. Una combinazione che ci permette di trovare i punti giusti del fiume, restare al sicuro in un angolo di mondo davvero selvaggio e, soprattutto, divertirci moltissimo.

"No one knows this fishery better than the Kayapó. Kendjam Lodge is run in deep cooperation with the tribe, and every fishing boat departs the lodge each day with not only an English-speaking pro guide, but also one or two Kayapó guides. It’s a combination which means we find the right places on the river, stay safe in a very wild corner of the world, and have a lot of fun."

Il Kendjam Lodge stesso ricorda un po’ un campo tendato africano, anche se in realtà offre camere in stile chalet in legno con bagno privato… un lusso, per la giungla. La routine quotidiana è semplice: sveglia, colazione, si sale sulle barche e si naviga verso il ritmo della giornata, si pesca, pranzo in barca, si pesca ancora, rientro al lodge, doccia, relax, cena e riposo. E poi si ricomincia. Qualcosa nella natura selvaggia del luogo, nello spirito di squadra delle guide e nei nuovi amici Kayapó, insieme all’abbondanza di pesci pronti a collaborare, fa sembrare tutto questo un vero paradiso.

"Kendjam Lodge itself feels a bit like an African tent camp, though we are treated to actually wooden cabin-style rooms with en-suite bathrooms… posh for the jungle. The daily routine is simple: rise, breakfast, head to the boats and motor to the beat of the day, fish, boat lunch, fish more, motor home, shower, hang, dinner, sleep. Rinse and repeat. Something about the wildness of the place, the camaraderie of the guides and newfound Kayapó friends, and the plethora of fish ready to come play, makes it seems like paradise."
